It’s claimed to be an easy to mix formula, and they also offer a ready to drink liquid shake. Their powdered shake has a combination of dry milk and calcium caseinate that equals 1. They currently offer three flavors in Strawberry, Chocolate, and French Vanilla. These shakes are meant to be drunk alongside the other meal replacement foods offered by the company. On their own, they’re said to be a nutritionally healthy choice. So are these shakes truly effective for weight loss? What kinds of ingredients are added, and are they wholesome? This Optifast review will help you discover the truth about this meal replacement. This ingredient is often imported in from difference countries. There’s controversy over its use, due to a 2. It was found to be contaminated with melamine, which is added to help increase the protein content. This could also lead to kidney stones and renal failure. A recall began in China after several people had debilitating illnesses. Fructose: Fruit sugar that is absorbed directly into the bloodstream when digested. It’s considered one of the worst sweeteners that can cause metabolism disorders, as well as raise the risk for obesity. The University of California, Davis performed a clinical study showing: “increased consumption of fructose may be detrimental in terms of body weight and adiposity and the metabolic indexes”“shown to induce visceral obesity, insulin- resistant diabetes, and hyperlipidemia”This means it can cause issues with raising blood sugar, and it can increase the risk for weight gain. These kinds of effects have also shown a rise in obesity related illnesses. Fructose when it’s extracted from fruits has been shown in many other clinical studies to be harmful to overall health. Calcium Caseinate: Protein taken from the casein found in milk. It’s a cheap protein source often added to increase the amount of protein in foods. Though it can lead to a sense of fullness, this ingredient is cheap to make, and isn’t as potent in amino acids as other protein sources. The manufactures also fail to list the total amino acid profile. So it’s impossible to determine whether it has enough amino acids to help the body’s performance. When replacing meals it’s important to determine how much amino acids are provided, instead of solely looking at the total protein content. You can discover the best shake brands for weight loss by clicking here. Canola Oil (BHA/BHT): Oils made from the processed seeds of rapeseed. BHA and BHT are preservatives added to help fats from going rancid. Live Science has mentioned there are possible side effects. They listed studies in which this ingredient lead to: “cancer in rats, mice and hamsters”In California this ingredient has also been listed as a carcinogen. Artificial Flavor: Man made synthetic ingredient used to help make food taste a particular way. It’s often added to help substitute natural flavors that would be harder to keep fresh. It can be extracted from many different common allergens including soy, wheat, and corn. Though it’s not required for the company to list how they sourced this ingredient from. This could potentially lead to unwanted side effects. Optifast Quality of Ingredients. Optifast has a total of 1. Multiple studies have shown it to potentially raise the risk for obesity. Also, there are preservatives that have shown to potentially be carcinogenic. Both of these can be purchased for much cheaper, though they’re not the best protein sources. The company also fails to list the total amino acid score, so it’s impossible to determine if the protein provided is well rounded enough. There’s far too much calories as well at 1. The combination of high sugar, calories, and no fiber make this a very poor meal replacement. It can all make weight gain easier, instead of helping support a weight loss diet plan. They only offer sales for people who visit their clinics, and then they try to recruit people into their centers. It’s important to be able to know how fairly this is priced. Though due to the high amounts of sugar, low quality protein, no explanation as to the amino acid content, and the 0 grams of fiber, this shake isn’t a well- rounded enough meal replacement. It’s unlikely to help people with appetite suppression. Web MD advises to find a meal replacement that offers the following: “3- 5 grams of fiber per serving”Without this, you aren’t getting enough fiber to help promote healthy digestion and appetite suppression. Since you aren’t getting enough fiber from this shake, it does not qualify as a proper meal replacement. You’d have to supplement with additional fiber sources to make up for the lack of quality. Before considering any shake, it’s important to know exactly how much it costs. Since this meal replacement has poor ingredients, it shouldn’t be priced too high. Business of Optifast. The Nestl. They can be found via the following customer support information: Phone Number: (8. Address: 4. 45 State Street Fremont, Michigan 4. They fail to mention whether or not they offer money back return. It’s unknown how this problem was handled to ensure it wouldn’t contaminate any future batches of their foods. EDITOR’S TIP: For the best results with meal replacement shakes diet our experts recommend to use it at least 5 months. Save your money buying a few bags of meal replacement product. Customer Opinions of Optifast. There aren’t many reviews on the shakes themselves. Here are a few of the limited customer reviews online: “found I was always hungry”“first three days were awful”“struggling a bit”There was the common opinion that this meal replacement failed to suppress people’s appetite. For many, it was shown to cause extreme hunger and many continued to have constant thoughts about food. The company also fails to provide any testimonials or studies to show why this shake would be a proper meal replacement. Without much information available, it’s unknown if this is priced fairly, or if customers found it useful for weight loss. The few reviews have all been negative towards the overall quality of these shakes. Optifast has too much sugar added that’s from a sweetener shown in studies to potentially cause weight gain. Better options are available that have no preservatives, high quality protein, and all natural ingredients. Its customers have also reviewed this shake poorly. When searching for a proper meal replacement, it’s important that customers reviewed it highly, and that it has a well- rounded nutritional profile. There’s simply not enough support for this meal replacement to rank it as one of the best. The very best shake out of 2. Shake. There’s 5 grams of fiber, 1 gram of sugar, and just 9. She told me, after she pointed to my belly, . I needed to exercise more, for sure, but I also needed to change some other habits . The scale wasn't moving. On Jan. 6, I put on baggy gym clothes and went back to the gym, anyway. I was pumping away on an elliptical trainer when I glanced up at a TV screen and noticed Dr. Oz was touting his new two- week rapid weight loss program. I plugged in my ear buds. His giddy audience had lost an average of 9 pounds on the diet, and some had shed more than 2. This diet, Oz pointed out, was influenced by three other diet books he admired: . Oz has his doubters; some of my friends call him a quack. Others appreciate his sometimes unorthodox prescriptions for better health. I was on the fence about Oz. He is a doctor, after all, but I sometimes wondered if all of his health fixes were too good to be true. And I am skeptical of diets, period. I have not been on a strict diet since high school, when I made up what I now call . After drinking carrot juice for two weeks, I became so weak I was nearly pulled out to sea while swimming in the Pacific in San Blas, Mexico. Since then, I have followed the . I guessed pickles are allowed because they are fermented, so they are good for the gut. And the permitted foods are actually quite satisfying: . We could eat 6 ounces of chicken, turkey or fish each day. The first week, we spent about $8. After that, the grocery bills declined pretty dramatically . When you swap out starchy and surgary foods for low- glycemic vegetables, your body can burn through its glycogen storage and eventually start burning fat. The diet came with only two recipes . I used two 3- quart batches as a base for many of the soups and stews we made over the two weeks. We kept our meals pretty simple. Because the print- out from the Dr. Oz website didn't say we couldn't use spices, we used plenty. But we stayed away from condiments, which often contain sugar. After three days on the diet, I also was suffering from a mean caffeine headache from lack of coffee. I called my doctor, just to see what she thought about the diet. Jennifer Wisdom- Behounek also is an assistant professor of clinical family and community medicine at the University of Missouri. Her patients call her Dr. Wisdom, which seems appropriate. She told me my coffee headaches would eventually go away and to drink a lot of water. As for the diet, she said, . He started off by saying all the things you have to get rid of. I think a lot of people find that to be difficult. I do love the concentration on vegetables, which help with glycemic control. But I think that should have been the main focus. And I thought he didn't spend enough time on why that should be the main focus. Still, she thought many of his recommendations are probably good for most people. Taking out artificial products and focusing on real foods is really important. Wisdom told me, the diet probably would help people shed some bad habits, but it . I looked it up online. Oz blurb appeared on the cover. He called the book a . After about a week, I noticed that I felt less swollen. We planned our meals, but they were so simple we could put most of them together in 3. We bought a lot of organic green tea. I became fond of Numi's organic gunpowder green tea, and we also religiously drank a pot of organic peppermint or ginger tea in the evenings . One of the best parts of the diet was the bath. Nearly every day, usually in the evening, I soaked in a warm bath with Epson salt and baking soda. It's supposed to draw out toxins. I began to look forward to it, like that glass of wine in the evening. On Day 8, my husband began to list all of the meaty pasta dishes he was going to make when he went off the diet. I think he was hungry. Every morning, I set out our hot lemon water and the breakfast smoothie, which kept me satiated until about 1. For lunches, I often ate the leftover soups. I liked adding more vegetables to my diet, but I kept thinking, . I feel for my friends who are gluten- or dairy- intolerant. We didn't go out to dinner while we were on the diet. But my husband met a couple of guy friends one day at Flat Branch for lunch. His buddies feasted on bulky burgers and beer. He ordered the Paleo Platter, which contained saut. I think they made fun of him when he ordered tea. On day 9, a friend invited me to lunch at Sycamore. I ordered green tea and a hummus wrap . On Day 1. 0, I joined another friend for vegetable soup at Main Squeeze. At home, my favorite diet dish was lentil soup because it had staying power, and it was very flavorful. Mushrooms in soups, too, tended to satisfy hunger. Parmesan would have been nice with that, too, by the way. Spices made what would have been dull much more interesting. We livened up fish, chicken and vegetables with various seasonings, including Cajun spices, smoked paprika, turmeric, cumin and an array of chili powders. Today marks Day 1. I lost a total of 9 pounds and 2 inches around my middle as of yesterday. When I combined the healthy eating with stretching and exercise, my back felt better. I also feel more alert. My husband lost 7 pounds, but he said he . In fact, my husband and I made a pact to check our portions, keep the focus on the veggies, cut back on our alcohol intake and keep up the exercise. So, Dr Oz's Two- Week Rapid Weight Loss Plan was helpful. It certainly didn't hurt. I changed some bad habits and became more conscious about what I was putting in my mouth. A slice of smoked gouda would taste really good about now. You can find green lentils in health food markets. Brown lentils would be fine, as well. French green (Le Puy) or brown lentils. Meanwhile, rinse lentils and pick out any small stones; combine the lentils with the remaining 4 cups water in a soup pot or Dutch oven. Reduce heat to maintain a simmer, cover and cook for 2. Trim the white ribs out of the chard; chop the greens and slice the ribs. Keep in separate piles. Dice the turnip and chopped greens blend; set aside. When the lentils have cooked for 2. Cover and cook for 1. Stir in the rainbow chard leaves, smoked paprika, cumin and coriander. When the onions are caramelized, stir a little of the simmering liquid into them; add them to the soup. Return to a simmer, cover and cook 5 minutes more. Stir in the reserved kale/spinach blend, cilantro, jalape. Stir in 1 tablespoon lemon juice. Taste and add more lemon juice and/or pepper, if desired. Garnish each bowl of soup with lemon juice, Greek yogurt and a slice of avocado. Leftovers: Cover and refrigerate for as long as 3 days. SPINACH- BROWN RICE SOUP WITH YOGURTCookbook author Mollie Katzen calls this a . The addition of the rice makes it a very filling meal. I adapted this recipe slightly, using the short- grain brown rice I had in the refrigerator rather than basmati. I also added extra cumin and turmeric as it didn't seem spiced enough. If I make it again, I'll make it with brown basmati. Make sure the yogurt you use is at room temperature and the soup is not too hot when you add it, otherwise the yogurt will break and curdle.
